Advertising Media Journal Assignment

Before doing this assignment, I had no idea just how much advertisement I exposed myself to everyday. So when I received this assignment, it was definitely interesting to me to see how much advertising I consume in one day. I did my log on April 14, 2010 and I started off my day like I usually do with watching Regis and Kelly on television. The products advertised on this television talk show was geared more towards adult women and families. The majority of advertising on the talk show was about movies, actors and actresses they were having on the show, a lot of women's products, and also travel advertisements. There is a lot of promoting with movies and television shows, and they advertise to the audience very well by having the actual Hollywood actors and actresses come on the show. While sitting in class, I noticed that in The Keystone building there is a lot of advertisements for the NCAA sports and there is also bulletins in each classroom that advertise meetings. For example, there was signs advertising students to join the S.L.A.M. club, which is the sports management club at Kutztown University. Also, in the Keystone Gym they have so much advertising when you walk in. The walls are covered with advertising for local company's. I knew that when I got onto a computer when I finished with classes that I was immediately going to see various types of advertising. Of course, the first website that I went onto was Facebook and you cannot help but notice all the advertising they do on the side of the screen. Facebook takes what things you have listed on your profile, and Facebook uses that information to advertise products for you to buy. For example, on my facebook page there was a lot of advertising for 22 year old women wanting to buy UGGS and New York Yankee tickets. Facebook saw that I am a fan of UGGs and The New York Yankees and used that information to get me to buy things. I believe that all the advertising I saw so far through the day was appropriately targeted and they make sense for my life right now. All the advertising in The Keystone was targeted to college students in the sports management major and Facebook's advertising was targeted to 22 year old women. Finally before going to bed, I read the latest issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine. There is so much advertising in that magazine that it could make you go crazy. Most of the products that are being advertised are geared to women. Examples of things being advertised are all types of make-up products, Revlon, CoverGirl, clothing company's like BeBe, BabyPhat, perfume ads for Chanel, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, and women's feminine products like Skintimate and Nivea. All of those ads make sense for my life because I use a lot of those products and I like a lot of those designers. The advertisements are perfectly geared to the right targeted audience.
In conclusion, looking back at all the advertising that I was exposed to in just one day really shows how much of an influence it has in my life. I get ideas of what I want to purchase or participate in by looking at advertisements.
